NY Sheep and Wool Festival October 17-18 2009
Just a reminder we will be accepting fiber for processing at the NY Sheep and Wool festival in Rhinebeck, NY. There is not much of a wait time now. Ony 2-3 MONTHS! This is a great time to get your fiber in as you will have new yarn in your stash ready for the long winter nights or a full stock of yarn for the spring shows.
See you all there! October 17-18 2009

2009 Still River Mill Newsletter
Newsletter # 4
12/04/2008
Dear Readers and Loyal Customers,
Happy Holidays! Time is flying by here at the mill. Hence only 4 newsletters in as many years. Deirdre and I wish to thank you all for your continued support and let you know a little about what we have been up to (besides processing fiber like mad).
Despite the uncertain economic times, we have decided to not raise prices. Raising prices isn't going to make it any easier for anybody, so we are staying put for the time being! We also realize that with the economic downturn that many of you need your fiber back quicker to realize a faster return on investment. So, we have added staff and processing capability to our mill. The barn is now bigger (although not completely finished) and all the machines are down on the first floor. This has taken our queue down from 9 months to about 4 months starting in January 2009. Get your order in now for shearing season 2009 and you'll be that much farther ahead in the queue! All you need to tell us is the weight of your fiber and a small deposit to get in line.
We are happy to announce also that we built the addition to the barn as greenly as economically feasible. This includes using reclaimed lumber from an old barn, recyclable metal roofing, spray foam insulation made from soybean and corn oil (no you can't eat it), radiant floor heat, wash water recycling, high efficiency air conditioning, large windows for passive solar heating, and a new solar drying room. We did most of the work ourselves and are quite happy with the results and the savings. We also plan to add solar water heating and solar panels in the near future to help with raw energy costs.
With the expansion, we are also pleased to be able to offer some new services as well. We now have a ball winder for those of you who do want a ball package for retail or ease of knitting. A rug yarn maker was also added which creates the yarn using a jute core and wrapping the roving coming from the carder around the jute core. We are now also able to offer our first finished product as a service, too: Woven Rugs! We have a 36" loom and can make small area rugs with your fiber.
Organic processing and sustainability has always been a goal of Still River Mill. Although we are financially unable to be certified as an organic processor in 2009, Still River Mill is processing according to organic standards put forth by the Organic Trade Association. Our soap is organic, our spinning oils are organic, and now our dyes, Greener Shades, conform to organic processing standards, too. The dyes are new this year and we are the sole distributor of them. They are used exclusively in our mill as they are safer and we find them to perform better than any other acid dye that we have tried. There is a lot of excitement about these dyes and we've had a great response so far from users and wholesalers. Please check them out at www.greenershades.com.
We'd especially like to thank our dedicated employees for their hard work, enthusiasm, and support.
Best wishes to you all for 2009.

Expansion!
We are expanding! We are just beginning to expand the barn to allow space for new equipment. This should enable us to get our backlog down to a more reasonable time frame. A ball-winder is planned as well as a water re-cycler which should save us up to 40% of each wash load of water.
